SNG Maribor Symphony Orchestra

The SNG Maribor Symphony Orchestra consists of musicians from the Slovene National Theatre Maribor (ie. SNG Maribor). The orchestra has a two-part role, it plays all the opera performances of the Maribor Opera House and since 2005 it has organised its own subscription series of concerts that includes 6 symphonic concerts per year.

The SNG Maribor Symphony Orchestra is one of the leading ensembles in Slovenia and has a relatively long-standing tradition in orchestral performances. The rich history of the Orchestra is closely linked with the work of its home institution, the Maribor Opera House, which has since 1919 undergone several transformations, caused by the major political and cultural changes, such as the fall of the Habsburg Monarchy after World War I, the fall of Nazism in 1945 and finally also the independence of Slovenia in 1991.

Only two years following the independence of Slovenia, the Orchestra started working under the name of Maribor Philharmonics, which was founded as an association on 11 June 1993, but remained active only until November 2004, when it began organising symphonic concerts in the Opera of the Slovene National Theatre Maribor. This practise continued, particularly after the inauguration of the Great Hall. The Orchestra, which is an inherent part of all concerts and opera and ballet performances of SNG Maribor, has been focusing on creating and performing instrumental music as well as music and theatre performances of various genres, from Baroque and Classicism to 19th- and 20th-century music as well as contemporary symphonic performances under the baton of various internationally recognised conductors from Slovenia and abroad.
